How do you make goals again?

Hi everyone. It has been a bit of a struggle in the recent past, so I apologize for my absence. I just wanted to start of with that.

Recently I have been watching a whack of videos on youtube, and it seems like everyone and their brother has lists of goals. I feel left out.

The problem is I can't remember how to make goals. How does one forget that? Isn't it like riding a bike? In grade one your teacher asks you to make a list of goals for that particular school year, that was super easy. Now I am 32 years old and I want to make a list of goals particularly since I feel my life is in a bit of shambles lately. I need personal priorities and achievements I guess.

I know taking care of my family, and my home are both wonderful achievements, but I want some goals for me. My personal growth, and spirit.

I think I am going to find a place in my Filofax [either in my personal(which I know I have to post about...I am so far behind..see right there I am sure there is a blog goal in there somewhere) or my A5] to create a few lists and 'scribble' sections to hatch some stuff out.

Do you have a goals list or section in your Filofax? I and desperate for ideas on how to do it, and most importantly what constitutes a goal.

I apologize immensely for the discombobulation of this post. It is about as muddled as my brain is right now. Thank you so much for sticking with me. It means the world.

  1. Hi Steph, nice to 'see' you! Hope you are keeping well.

    I keep a copy of my LifeGrid in my FF. I use it as a basis for planning my goals. It's based on something I read in Susan Jeffers' book Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway. It makes me consider all aspects of my life, including me! I write down my dreams for 1-5 years ahead for each section and then the steps towards achieving them.

    For writing the actual goals, I use a Life Coaching book by Eileen Mulligan. A key point she (and others) makes is to set positive goals e.g. "I want to wake up feeling full of energy" not "I want to feel less tired when I wake up".

    Ray has created a nice FF sized Monthly Planner in which to set work and personal goals & to review them.

    1. Hi! Thank you for the lovely greeting. I have printed off the planner from Rays site, but I can't seem to put my goals down. As I said I am quite lost right now as to what a goal is. Is it like brush my teeth everyday, or something like always have money in my wallet? I some how feel like I may be over thinking this. Sending you a letter soon as well, trying to find something to stick in as a thank you for the lovely stickies.

  3. I am so glad I am not the only one who doesn't really have any "goals", I have the "I want/need to get a job" goal but that is not very specific and I think it is part of the reason why I have not yet found my next job.

    Last night, whilst watching the Fireworks at my local display I did decide on a goal - which to be honest is a little crazy but when the time comes it would make the occasion very special! Being a bit cryptic here but I am going to write about it somewhere so will keep it to myself for now. That said, its the only "life goal" I have really stumbled across so far when so many around me have achieved the goals I know they had since we were about 14 (get belly button pierced, get married and have kids - all done by my very good friend). I think it's high time I started thinking about what I want to do, where I want to go, both personally and professionally so I can put my efforts in the direction I want to go rather than in too many different directions!

    Like you mention above, how do I set a goal? Are there certain goals we should think about - I swear there are parts of life I missed hearing critical talks about or important manuals I missed receiving on such subjects!

    Hope you can make some headway in this goal setting. It was comforting in the mean while to know I am not quite so alone!

    1. I am so glad I am not the only one too. ooh you got to see fireworks..you're so lucky. I love fireworks. Thank you so much for your input, it is so good to know I am not alone. So far I am not getting very far, but I am checking out a few online articles and sites that were suggested to me, I will update soon, I hope.

  4. I've given up setting goals, tried a few times but life gets in the way, so long as the house is relatively tidy, the kids are clothed and fed, and I get a bit of me time, even if it's just to read a chapter of a book, i'm happy :-)
