My Modalu Pippa and what's inside....

Let me first start by saying I love this bag. It is perfect for me in so many ways. I saved up and was put on a waiting list to get this bag. Now it may not be that expensive to some but at almost $300 it was pricey for me. I am not very good a reviews but I will do my best.

The bag is gorgeous soft leather. The zips are sturdy and easy to open and close. The handles are soft and comfortable to hold. There are seashells on the ends of the zipper pulls, and the lining is a light colour with seashells on it. I am not totally sure I like the black around the zippers but I don't think I would want it to match the leather either. I like how the handles on this model are sort of cinched together whereas the newer ones are just basically looped and fastened around the rings. The rings are also nice and strong, there is no pull on the bag at all, and as you will see I have quite a bit in it.

I got the bag in Shark and it is a wonderful grey colour. I love it.  There are a couple of marks on my bag that I will post a picture of, mostly on the zipper pulls. I wrote to Modalu about it and they advised me to take it back to the point of purchase and seek a replacement. I am not sure if I will do that or not. I have been using my bag for about 3 months now and the leather has just gotten so soft and lovely, I don't know if I want to 'work-in' another one. Let me know what you think I should do in the comments below.

On to the pictures

This is the front of the bag. The gold Modalu plaque and two great front zips

This is the back view. On some of the newer ones, and the different colours, the zip is covered by a piece of leather.

A side shot of the three zip compartments. My favourite feature I might add (the compartments, not the zips lol)

One of the 'damaged' zip pulls. It is smooth to the touch it is almost like the colour faded for one reason or another.

The other zip pull that is having the same issues. I don't know what to do...I am so conflicted

So here are the three compartments. Two taller ones and a shorter middle one.

In the front pocket that is closed I keep my blackberry in there, and the one that is open has my keys, altoid smalls in a playboy tin, and ruby red grapefruit sunkist mints

This is the front main compartment.

In there I keep my Matt & Nat pouch with a cover girl compact and a kabuki brush, my benadryl itch stick (I have mondo bad hives) Elizabeth Arden 8 hr. hand cream, Tino by Mikakuto apple candies, and my Dr. Dre monster beats designed by Vivienne Tam

This is the middle compartment

In there I keep a pouch with straws in it (ya I am that weird) a pack of band-aids/plasters because of the hive issue and I have kids, my Matt & Nat make up pouch, some tampons and my Kobo touch.

This is the back main compartment.

In there I keep my Filofax Finsbury compact, my wallet and a pouch with some crystal light, true lemon, true lime and the like.

In the very back zip I keep some loose papers, a coupon pouch, and my bus pass

Here is another shot of the white specks on the inside of the front handle

And some on the side of the bag.

It doesn't seem to be getting worse, so I am really torn as to what to do. I realize bags will age and wear, but is this normal or a design flaw? I don't know. Help is greatly appreciated.

As always if you like this post or any of my others please follow along so you don't miss out on the next one.

  1. Steph,

Thanks so much for doing this post. Regarding the wear/discoloration, would it be difficult for you to exchange it (not sure if you are located in the UK). If it wouldn't be too hard, I would be more inclined to exchange it. Breaking in a new one might be fun. It's like getting a new bag all over again! And this time you won't have that nagging thought reminding you that our bag has some slight issues.

If you need to send it back by mail....that gets a bit tougher, at least in my view. Once I've gotten whatever it is that I've wanted in my itchy little hands, it is extremely difficult to let it go. So, if you seem to be the same way, then you should maybe consider a few things: 1) on a day-to-day basis, do you think about the discoloration; does it actively bother you? 2) when you are using/wearing the bag, are there things noticeable, therefore detracting from the bag? 3) can you positively think about it in these terms: your bag is yours, it is unique and not cookie-cutter perfect. It makes your bag different and only yours. If you answered yes to 1 & 2, you may want to send it off for another one.

Hope this helps in some way.

Your bag is gorgeous! Thanks for sharing it.

    1. Hi, thanks for the comments. I am not in the UK but we have a shop in Canada that has exclusivity to see Modalu here. I could just go and exchange it. I don't think about it unless I see it which isn't too often, and I don't think it is really noticeable to others. My main fear/worry is that it will get worse. If I knew that was as bad as it was gonna get I would keep it no question. It is just that lingering....is it going to get worse???

    2. Then I say take a little field trip and get it exchanged for one that will alleviate your fears of the discoloration getting worse. Start anew!

  2. Hello, Steph! Just curious, what did you decide to do? Also, had to let you know that you are such an enabler! Because of you I bought the Shark Pippa too AND fell so in love with it that I also bought the small Pippa in toffee as well!

    2. I just read your update. Will be leaving a comment there. Regarding the shark vs toffee question, I haven't been able to bring myself to use the toffee one yet! I just adore the shark and want to keep enjoying that one for a bit longer. It will be interesting to see which one is my preferred. You created a monster! Now I want the wallet as well! So far I've been able to resist the urge to get it. I'm just worried that Modalu will send out another 10% off offer and it may just be enough to send me over the edge. :-)

Thanks for doing an update on your bag. I've been wondering. Off to leave you a message on that post.

    3. I would love to live in the UK and get a voucher for Modalu....but it probably wouldn't be all that great for my finances lol....Let me know what you think of the toffee...I a considering a small one, but like you I love the shark so much. I only change it out for a tote once in a while and only for a day when I don't want to take the nice one with me. lol....monsters we are lol

  3. I don't live in the UK either, I'm in the US. I assume that I got an email with the 10% off offer because I bought both the Pippas directly from their site and then signed up to receive news and offers from them. I've been trying to find reviews about the wallet but have only really found one. And it was good enough that now I want one!

I'm happy to let you know how I get along with the small Pippa.

  4. A blog called Serenity of Beauty. I can't seem to paste the link. Sorry. I found it by googling "pippa wallet review". The one that she reviews is the toffee one. Sooooo pretty!!!!
